Resilience Lab

What is Resilience?

According to the American Psychological Association, resilience is often referred "the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress — such as family and relationship problems, serious health problems, or workplace and financial stressors. As much as resilience involves 'bouncing back' from these difficult experiences, it can also involve profound personal growth."

Resilience in the Making Lab

Health Promotion Services presents, Resilience in the Making (RITM), an innovative, empirically-based resilience program that adopts a holistic approach in strengthening resilience.  RITM provides UC San Diego students with the opportunity to strengthen their resilience to optimize their success in all facets of life -- personally, academically, professionally, and socially.

1:1 Biofeedback (Stress Management) with HPS Staff

1:1 biofeedback session allow students to work individually with a member of the HPS staff to identify sources of stress, problem solve ways to reduce stress, and practice relaxation techniques with our biofeedback software. HRV Biofeedback technology allows students to see, understand, and control how their emotional state (stressed, angry, grateful, peaceful) influences their physiological well-being. We use the HeartMath emWave Pro program to monitor physical responses in heart rate variability. Students will be able to work 1:1 with our staff to learn how stress affects their body and how to reduce it.

RITM aims to strengthen resilience through education surrounding breathing techniques, and how to gain a greater awareness of and control over one's physiological stress responses. To supplement these physiological strategies, students will also be provided educational opportunities related to other behavioral mechanisms for bolstering resilience.
